This Tangra chilli chicken brings the flavours of Kolkataβs famous Chinatown into your kitchen. Itβs spicier and saucier than regular chilli chicken, and the air fryer gets the chicken perfectly crispy without deep-frying.

This Tangra chilli chicken has been making our Indo-Chinese nights at home so much better. If youβve had regular chilli chicken a hundred times by now and itβs started to feel a bit dull, the Tangra version from Kolkataβs Chinatown is going to bring that excitement back again. Itβs spicier, saucier, and the flavour of the sauce is so much deeper than what you get from a standard chilli chicken recipe.
We already have our Chinese chilli chicken dry on the blog, which my family loves, but ever since I made this Kolkata chilli chicken recipe version, itβs been a tough competition between the two. Try both and see which one your family picks.
Tangra chilli chicken comes from Kolkataβs Chinatown, an area called Tangra, where Chinese-Indian families have been cooking Indo-Chinese food for decades. The sauce uses a more complex mix of dark soy, oyster sauce, ketchup, and chilli sauce along with generous amounts of green chillies, which gives it a deeper, bolder flavour than the standard chilli chicken you get at most restaurants.
Yes. Deep fry the marinated chicken pieces in hot oil until golden and crispy, about 3-4 minutes. Drain on paper towels and then toss in the sauce as usual. The air fryer is a healthier alternative that uses much less oil, but deep frying gives you an equally crispy result.
Paneer cubes, firm tofu, or cauliflower florets all work well with this same sauce and method. For paneer and tofu, coat them in the same marinade and air fry until golden. For cauliflower, our bang bang cauliflower uses a similar approach, and the Tangra sauce would work beautifully with it.
This chilli chicken Bengali recipe pairs best with rice or noodles. Here are our favourites from the blog:
Kolkataβs Tangra is the only Chinatown in India, and one of the oldest in the world. Chinese immigrants, mostly Hakka people from Guangdong province, settled in Kolkata in the late 18th century. They originally worked in leather tanneries and shoe-making, and the food they cooked at home gradually blended Chinese techniques with Indian spices and ingredients. That fusion is what we now call Indo-Chinese food, and Tangra is where it was born. The chilli chicken, manchurian, and fried rice that every Indian restaurant serves today can all be traced back to the kitchens of this small neighbourhood in East Kolkata.Β

Once you make Tangra style chilli chicken, thereβs really no going back to the regular version. Fair warning. Tag me on Instagram @my_foodstory when you make it, Iβd love to see how yours turns out.

Fresh tomatoes, fragrant garlic, a generous drizzle of olive oil and a fiery kick of chilliβthis classic penne Arrabbiata is proof that simple ingredients can create seriously delicious pasta!
There are some pasta recipes that prove you really donβt need a long list of ingredients to create something incredibly delicious. This classic penne Arrabbiata is one of them.
This super-popular Italian pasta is all about a simple, fiery tomato sauce made with fresh tomatoes, garlic, red pepper flakes and good-quality extra virgin olive oil.
The tomatoes are blanched, peeled and cooked down slowly with tomato paste until they turn into a thick, intensely flavored sauce.
Toss in perfectly al dente penne, and you have a bowl of pasta that is comforting, rustic and packed with flavor.
What is classic Penne Arrabbiata?
Classic penne Arrabbiata is a classic Roman pasta dish from the Lazio region of Italy. It consists of penne pasta tossed in a spicy tomato sauce flavored primarily with garlic and red chilli flakes.
Unlike creamy pasta sauces, Arrabbiata is wonderfully light yet hearty and vibrant. Traditionally, the sauce is made with tomatoes, garlic, olive oil and chilli, allowing the natural flavor of the tomatoes to shine through.
In this version, I used fresh tomatoes that are first blanched, peeled and deseeded, then cooked down with tomato paste, freshly minced garlic and red pepper flakes.
The sauce is simmered until thick and concentrated before the cooked penne is tossed through it.
The name Arrabbiata literally means βangryβ in Italian, referring to the characteristic heat from red pepper flakes. But don't let the name intimidate you!

Making these soy sauce chicken wings in the air fryer is a game changer! Itβs quick, easy, and mess-free. All you need to do is marinate, air fryer, and serve, and an entire batch is ready in 20 minutes!Β

These soy sauce chicken wings in air fryer is one of those recipes we make on repeat at home. Theyβre perfect for weeknight dinners when I want something that feels more fun than the usual stuff, but they also work so well when weβre having friends over. The marinade takes just a few minutes to throw together, and after that, the air fryer does pretty much all the work.
I especially love that thereβs very little mess involved. The wings go straight from the marinade into the air fryer, so thereβs no deep frying, splattering oil or a pile of dishes to deal with afterwards. They come out juicy on the inside, nicely browned and slightly crisp on the outside, with all that savoury soy and sesame flavour. Honestly, these disappear pretty quickly every time I make them!
Chicken: Skin-on chicken wing pieces. I like using skin-on pieces as they get really crispy on the outside, but skinless pieces work tooΒ Β
Soy sauce: I have light soy sauce for that savory umami flavor, but dark soy sauce will work in a pinchΒ
Vinegar: Adds a dash of tangy freshness to the dish
White pepper powder: Adds a subtle earthy flavor and a kick of heatΒ
Salt and sugar: For balance and seasoning
Oil: I have used toasted sesame oil for its authentic Indo-Chinese and nutty flavors, but you can use a neutral-flavored oil if thatβs what you have availableΒ
Baking powder: Helps make the chicken skin light and crispyΒ Β
Stock powder: Adds a savory, umami flavor boost. A little goes a long wayΒ
Yes, but the cooking time will be different. Boneless chicken cooks faster than bone-in wings, so start checking earlier to prevent it from drying out.Β
Yes absolutely! You can bake them in a preheated oven at 220Β°C until the wings are cooked through and nicely browned, flipping them halfway through. Cooking time may vary depending on your oven and the size of the wings.
The wings should be deeply browned on the outside and cooked through near the bone. For the most reliable check, use a thermometer. The thickest part of the chicken should reach 74Β°C/165Β°F.
These soy chicken wings work really well as an easy appetiser or part of an Indo-Chinese-style meal. Serve them alongside:

These soy chicken wings are a breeze to put together thanks to the air fryer. They turn out crispy, juicy, and so delicious. I am convinced you wonβt be able to stop at one because theyβre so so addictive! Β

This edamame garlic rice turns leftover rice into a garlicky, protein-rich meal that takes about 20 minutes from start to finish. Thatβs because leftover rice deserves better than being microwaved and eaten plain.Β

This edamame garlic rice has become our favourite way to use up leftover rice at home. Thereβs almost always some sitting in the fridge from the night before, and this recipe makes sure it never goes to waste. I often add it to my kidsβ lunch boxes and it comes back clean every single time. If youβre a parent, you know thatβs a feat!Β
The garlic and sesame oil give it so much flavour, and the edamame adds a really good amount of plant-based protein that makes every bowl feel like a proper, filling meal.It comes together in about 20 minutes with barely any prep, and everything goes into one wok. You can have it on itβs own, but throw in some aloo or chicken curry and youβve got yourself a delicious, homemade meal in no time!Β Β
Edamame Pods: Fresh or frozen both work well. They need to be steamed, cooled in ice water, and then shelled before going into the rice.
Leftover Rice: Day-old or cold rice works best. Fresh hot rice tends to turn mushy when tossed in the wok.
Aromatics: Finely chopped garlic and spring onion whites, sautΓ©ed quickly on high heat.
Toasted Sesame Oil: Iβve used sesame oil for its nutty aroma, but any neutral oil works if you donβt have it.
Seasoning: Salt, white pepper, sugar, and light soy sauce.
Chilli Oil (Optional): Drizzled on top before serving for some extra heat.
Spring Onion Greens: For garnish.
Edamame are young soybeans that are harvested before they fully mature. They come in green pods and are commonly found in the frozen section of most supermarkets. Theyβre naturally high in protein, fibre, and iron, which is why theyβre so popular in plant-based cooking. In this recipe, the pods are steamed and then shelled to get the beans inside.
Yes. Shredded chicken, prawns, or even a fried egg on top all work really well. If adding chicken or prawns, cook them separately first and toss them in with the rice at the end so they donβt overcook.
Absolutely. Broccoli, corn, bell peppers, and mushrooms are all great additions. Just make sure to chop them small and sautΓ© them before the rice goes in so they cook through properly.
Yes, and it saves you the shelling step entirely. Just steam them for about 8-10 minutes instead of 15 since theyβre already out of the pod. Cool in ice water the same way.
This edamame garlic rice works as a quick meal on its own, but it also makes a great side. Here are a few pairings from the blog:
Edamame and mature soybeans are the exact same plant, just harvested at different stages. Edamame are picked when the beans are still young, green, and soft, usually about 80% of the way to full maturity. If left on the plant for a few more weeks, those same beans would dry out, turn yellow, and become the hard soybeans used to make tofu, soy milk, and soy sauce. So in a way, eating edamame is eating tofu before it becomes tofu.Β

This edamame rice recipe proves the best meals donβt always need a lot of ingredients or time. Just some leftover rice, a handful of edamame, and a hot wok. If you make it, share your bowls with me on Instagram @my_foodstory, Iβd love to see how yours turns out.

If you need a tofu recipe thatβs easy and delicious, then this Crispy Chili Tofu is just what you need! Itβs crispy, saucy, and has that addictive street-style Indo-Chinese flavor we all love so much!

If you havenβt yet found a tofu recipe you feel like eating on repeat or one you can add to your list of favorites, then I think Crispy Chili Tofu might just be the one. Itβs got crispy pieces of tofu that we cook in the air fryer until they turn crisp and golden brown, and a glistening sauce thatβs bursting with flavor that coats everything. The result is a dish thatβs got the same savory flavor and texture of street-style Indo-Chinese, but made cleaner and healthier in your kitchen.Β
I made this chili tofu recipe as a replacement for my paneer chilli recipe for dinner one night, and my family just couldnβt have enough of it. We love eating this with veg fried rice for a classic easy weeknight dinner. But you can serve it with hakka noodles, plain rice, or even use it as a filling to make rice paper rolls; the possibilities are endless!Β
Tofu: I have used extra firm tofu as it retains its shape and doesnβt break apart during the cooking process. Extra firm tofu also gives the recipe a nice biteΒ
Spices: White pepper powder, Kashmiri red chilli powder lend a spicy kickΒ
Corn flour: Used as a coating for the tofu to make it light and crispy. We also mix it in water to make a slurry which helps to thicken the sauce
Oil: Sunflower or neutral-flavored oil with a high smoke point
Sauces: A mix of schezwan sauce, light soy sauce, and oyster sauce for color, heat, and that authentic Indo-Chinese flavors
Veggies: Cubed bell peppers. (I have used red and green, but you can use whatever you have)Β
Garlic: Finely chopped for flavor and aromaΒ
Chicken stock: To adjust the consistency of the sauce as well as add flavor. Feel free to swap with veggie stock or simply water for a vegan or veg version
Spring onion greens: Used as garnish for freshness and crunch
Salt and sugar: For seasoning and balance
Yes, absolutely! Paneer tastes great in this recipe. In fact, I have an awesome paneer chilli recipe on the blog for you to check out!Β
Definitely! Chilli chicken is a popular street-style Indo-Chinese dish and is the non-veg version of this crispy chili tofu recipe.Β
Yes! You can shallow fry the coated tofu in a little oil over medium-high heat until golden and crispy on all sides. Drain on a wire rack or paper towel before adding it to the stir-fry.
Yes, simply swap the oyster sauce for vegetarian oyster sauce or mushroom stir-fry sauce and chicken stock or veggie stock or water. This keeps the same savoury, slightly sweet flavour while making the recipe vegetarian.

This crispy chili tofu recipe is the easiest way to make authentic, street-style Indo-Chinese dishes at home. Itβs clean, healthier, and so, so delicious. Making this chili tofu recipe in the air fryer also means we donβt need any extra oil and the whole process is mess free!

Juicy, spicy and beautifully charred, this smoky chilli garlic grilled chicken marinated in a base of Greek yogurt is an incredibly easy way to make restaurant-style grilled chicken at home!
If you love chicken with a little heat and lots of flavor, this chilli garlic grilled chicken is for you! The smokiness of these grilled chicken is on another level thanks to the cast iron skillet used for grilling!
It's an incredibly simple chicken recipe, but the flavor is anything but ordinary.
Chicken thighs and drumsticks are coated in a creamy Greek yogurt marinade spiked with crispy chilli garlic oil and paprika, then grilled on a cast-iron skillet until juicy on the inside and beautifully charred around the edges.
The Story Behind This Chilli Garlic Grilled Chicken Recipe
I absolutely love recipes that come together from a few simple ingredients but somehow taste like you put in much more effort than you actually did.
This chilli garlic grilled chicken is one of those recipes.
I wanted to make grilled chicken with a really bold chilli-garlic flavor, but without putting together a long list of spices or making a complicated marinade.
So I reached for two ingredients that work beautifully with chickenβGreek yogurt and crispy chilli garlic oil.
The Greek yogurt gives the chicken a lovely tangy coating and helps keep the meat juicy, while the crispy chilli garlic oil brings in the heat, garlic and all those delicious little crispy chilli bits.
A touch of paprika adds warmth and color, and that's pretty much all this chicken needs.
The chicken is then arranged directly on a cast-iron skillet and cooked in a hot oven until completely cooked through and charred around the edges.
And those charred edges? That's where the magic happens!
The result is juicy, tender chicken with a fiery chilli-garlic flavor and beautifully caramelized edges. It's the kind of chicken that works equally well for a weeknight dinner, a weekend barbecue-style meal or even meal prep.

This Chilli Egg Stir Fry is the latest Indo-Chinese dish in town! Spicy, saucy, tangy, and full of umami, itβs a dish you absolutely need to make ASAP!Β

This Chilli Eggs Stir Fry is my latest Indo-Chinese favorite dish. Itβs spicy, tangy, addictive, and like most Indo-Chinese dishes, super quick and easy to make. All you need is eggs, some basic Indo-Chinese sauces, a few veggies, and only 20 minutes to make this dish that will climb right up on your favorites list. This is an egg chilli dry style recipe, but you can easily turn it into a gravy if you want to serve it for dinner.Β
You can serve these chilli eggs as a starter as well as a quick and filling 5-pm snack. But I recently served as a side for dinner with some fried rice and noodles and believe me, the bowls were licked clean! Letβs find out how to make this delicious chilli egg recipe.Β
Eggs: Whole eggs, whisked to make an omeletteΒ
Spices: Crushed pepper, green chilli, and red chilli flakes for a slight kick of heat
Veggies: Tomatoes and capsicum for flavor and texture
Aromatics: Onions, spring onion greens, and minced garlic for flavor and aroma
Sauces: Light and dark soy sauce, ketchup, sriracha or red chilli sauce, and vinegar mixed together to make the sauceΒ
Sugar: For balance and a hint of sweetness
Salt: To seasonΒ
Corn flour: Mixed in water to form a slurry. Helps the sauce thicken
Oil: I have used groundnut oil but any neutral-flavored oil with a high smoke point like sunflower, vegetable, canola, etc. will work here
The key here is to be gentle. Make sure to cut the omelette into large pieces and put them into the pan only after the vegetables have been stir-fried. Toss gently once the sauce is added.
Absolutely. Increase the green chilli, sriracha or red chilli flakes according to your preference. For a milder version, reduce the green chilli and sriracha.
Make sure the corn flour is evenly mixed into the sauce before adding it to the pan. The sauce also needs to simmer for 1-2 minutes for the corn flour to activate and thicken it.

This egg chilli stir fry isnβt your usual starter, but once you try it, there is no going back. Itβs spicy, tangy, and full of delicious flavors and textures. Itβs a total must-try! If you make this recipe, DM me your pictures or tag me in stories over on my IG @my_foodstory β€οΈ Β
