Your CD collection is probably already degrading, and here's why

CDs have been around for a long time, with people still having ones from decades ago. Even today, CDs β€” which stand for compact discs β€” are sold to people who like owning physical music and want the additional content included with the physical copy rather than what is on streaming services.

In the United States, today is Labor Day, when we honor the American labor movement and the contribution of laborers. Considering how the middle class and laborers are currently under attack, with massive inflation, a growing gap between the ultra-rich and everyone else, and AI replacing workers, it's more important than ever to recognize this holiday.

For many people, today is a three-day weekend. One of my friend's kids knows that I'm self-employed. She asked if I got Labor Day off? I laughed. Nope, I use the extra day to catch up on all of my half-finished projects.

Among the things I accomplished?

Power!

I finally completed the DIY solar panel project that I started last year by putting the battery in a cabinet. It may not sounds like a big deal, but I can walk by the server rack without fear of electrocution.



Mounting it in the cabinet was much more difficult that it sounds. It required drilling holes through steel for the power cords, and mounting rubber grommets to prevent the sharp edges from damaging the cables. Inside:
  • The battery has plenty of space away from the walls so it won't short out, and it's sitting on a half-inch thick insulated foam mat to keep it isolated and safe.

  • A temperature sensor monitors it in case of overheating. The battery currently sits at 75Β°F (23.9Β°C) when idle or in use, and rises to 78Β°F (25.6Β°C) when charging. That's the sweet spot for keeping the battery running longer.

  • Fort Collins has surge pricing for electricity, where late afternoon's power is over 4 times more expensive. While I use this project for solar power, I'm also using it for load shifting. That's when you charge using cheaper power so you can use it later, when the price increases.

    To help with the load shifting, I mounted a battery charger plugged in at the bottom of the cabinet. The charger is controlled by a smart outlet. This allows the automated system to partially charge the battery at night, when electricity is cheap, and use the battery when power is more expensive.
On a typical day, this homemade solar solution provides about 5 hours of power on overcast days, and up to 9 hours when it's sunny. It's saving me about 30kWh per month. (That's about 28kWh when I subtract the charger's usage.)

At the current savings rate, it will probably pay itself off in 8 years. That's not bad for a fun (and dangerous) home project.

Music!

Last year, I wrote about how I sometimes relax by switching gears and doing something completely different. Yes, I'm still writing my bad poetry and still trying to put it to music. After a year, I'm happy to announce another album by Brain Dead Frogs: Reflections.



I often hear people say that AI music sounds like crap. However, the real problem is that people often put very little effort into the composition. Too many artists combine AI-written lyrics with AI-music, and very little manual effort. This results in meaningless lyrics, random quips, and no storyline. When the lyrics are dull, the music ends up sounding equally flat. On top of this, there's often no human curator to filter out the bad songs. This results in a flood of bad AI music.

With this album, I wrote all of the lyrics, selected and edited the compositions (sometimes fighting with Suno for days to make it sound the way I want it to sound), and manually curated the collection into an album. (I wrote over 20 songs, but only included the 12 best ones on this album.) The net result combines human-written lyrics with AI-generated music and vocals.

As far as topics and genres go, I have eclectic tastes. There's everything from 80s Big Hair Rock ("Bald") to Reggae ("I Ate The Last Unicorn"), latin guitar ("Dangerously Competent"), and even a Scottish Garage Band song written in Doric! (I used AI to translate my English poem into this Scottish dialect; it took a few iterations and help from a Doric dictionary.)

Since it's human written and human curated, I certainly hope it sounds better than typical "AI crap music."

The House!

After I left the office, I went to work at home. I mowed the lawn, swept the floor, and vaccummed the carpet. (It's allergy season, and this kind of cleaning really helps.) I also began moving piles of old stuff that we need to get rid of. On top of this, someone left a bunch of warm chocolate chip cookies on the counter, and I needed to help, uh, put them away!

If today was a holiday for you, then I hope your Labor Day was relaxing, fun, or productive. For me, I'm ready to get back to programming.

I finally found a Linux music player that feels better than Spotify's desktop app

I like to test out different music/media players on Linux every so often. I don't know how I missed out on Clementine. I've been using the Spotify desktop app on one of my machines for a little while as a media player. So, just for fun, I decided to pit them against one another in a bit of a "friendly competition." I was surprised to see which one I ended up liking better.

Audacity 4 Rebuilds the Open Source Audio Editor But Leaves Some Features Behind

BrianFagioli writes: Audacity 4.0 has been released with a rebuilt Qt interface, a new clip-editing model, customizable workspaces, native high-DPI rendering, and a new AUP4 project format. The open source audio editor also adds ASIO playback and recording support to official Windows builds, while bringing major changes to recording, playback, plugins, and project handling. The overhaul comes with some tradeoffs. Audacity 4.0 currently lacks several features found in Audacity 3, including Time Tracks, Note and MIDI tracks, Mixer, Macro Manager and scripting pipe, VAMP and LADSPA plugin hosting, and play-at-speed. The developers say they plan to bring the missing functionality back in future releases.

Perplexity Will Open Source Its Faster Lily AI Engine For Apple Silicon

BrianFagioli writes: Perplexity has built a local artificial intelligence engine designed specifically for Apple silicon and the Qwen3.6-35B-A3B model. Called Lily, the engine uses a Rust runtime and custom Metal kernels, with neither PyTorch nor MLX in its execution path. Perplexity says Lily averaged 23 percent faster prompt processing and 35 percent faster token generation than MLX-LM on an M5 Max MacBook Pro with 128GB of unified memory. Lily is more specialized than MLX-LM, which supports a much wider range of models and architectures. Perplexity says it plans to release Lily as open source, but the code is not available yet, leaving its performance claims dependent on internal testing for now.

Miniaturized, Working Replica of Vintage Leslie Speaker

Few pieces of vintage audio gear from the turn of the century (the previous one) inspire the kind of devotion that a Leslie speaker does. Sure, there are plenty of pieces that are rarer or more valuable, but the Leslie speaker has such a big following because of its uniqueness of physically moving sound around a room. Two rotating devices in the speaker physically direct the sound around the cabinet with musician-controlled speed, and this sound remains extremely difficult to reproduce faithfully without the moving components. But originals are enormous and meant for organs, so [Eric] built a 40% replica with a few modern touches for his guitar.

The build starts with a CAD model, where [Eric] works towards making the most accurate enclosure for his speaker as possible. The CAD model heads out to a CNC machine which can care most of the details into the wood, and he eventually is able to finish it, although it took a few tries with stains and paintbrushes of various types. For the speakers themselves, he’s using modern versions including modern brushless motors to drive the rotating elements. Like the original speaker, the high range of sound is sent through a rotating set of horns, of which one is only a counterweight, and the low range is directed out of the bottom of the cabinet through a large rotating drum. Both rotating elements here are 3D printed, and with everything put together and wired up [Eric] has a much more portable, faithful recreation of the original Leslie speaker.

There are some upgrades in the wiring too, which makes it work better with a guitar rather than for an organ. It’s also much lighter, and was a hit when he took it to let a few other guitarists to play as well. It’s not the first time we’ve seen the Leslie’s movement recreated for guitar, but it is the most alike to the classic 1930s-era speaker we’ve seen so far.

Sonos Has New Devices, a New OS, and Yes, a New App

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Wired: Sonos has a new app. Stop me if you've heard this one before. The smart speaker company, long a darling of the audio industry, undid much of the goodwill it earned with its multiroom speakers through a bevy of software updates that broke its app in 2024. Almost all app users hated it, citing the loss of features like volume control and accessibility tools meant to help blind people use the wireless speaker system. Sonos eventually owned up to the mistake, considered bringing back the old app again, then booted its CEO and marched its new leaders out to apologize profusely to win back the company's furious customers. Now, Sonos says it has a brand-new app update, infused with lots of generative AI features. The company also announced a new soundbar and its second pair of over-the-ear headphones. Sonos representatives say it doesn't want to be seen as a speaker company anymore, but as something bigger and more holistic. "For years people have been seeing us as a speaker company," says Brandon Holley, the interim hardware lead at Sonos. "What we actually are is an audio operating system." The company is calling that operating system Sonos 27, and it manifests in a few ways. [...] This is a lot of change for Sonos, something the company hasn't always handled gracefully. Sonos' home systems already aren't the easiest to set up, sometimes requiring separate apps for older products. The company may be rejiggering itself as an "audio operating system," but its software has long been the source of its troubles with getting its products to work right. Will AI smarts fix that? Maybe for its newer devices. But anyone with an existing system may still struggle. The AI features on products and in the Sonos 27 app will be opt-in, meaning you can avoid them entirely. "That really is our new approach to our app release," Patel says. "We're going to bring our customers along. We're going to listen more." That would be a good plan. Sounds like Sonos' speakers will be listening more, too. Sonos is emphasizing a more "customer-centric feedback listening approach" after the backlash to its previous redesign. Improvements include easier tab navigation, better room sorting, revamped volume controls, and new system-health tools for diagnosing connection problems. The centerpiece is Sonos 27voice, a generative AI voice assistant that can handle conversational music requests, connect with services like ChatGPT through Model Context Protocol, and power customizable "Sonos Custom Agents" for tasks such as automatically activating certain speakers. "Obviously AI is something that's very hot these days," Sonos software VP Sid Patel said. "So we have integrated various pieces of AI into our system." However, the features will only work with the newer S2 app, and Sonos cautions that "not every product will support every new feature," with detailed compatibility information coming later. Sonos is also branding its multiroom networking technology Sonos Fabric, which what Patel calls "the magic that has existed for what Sonos was built on." New Fabric features include portable surround, which lets users temporarily move speakers between rooms and have them automatically configure themselves for surround sound, and Headphone Linking, which lets users seamlessly switch audio between Sonos speakers and headphones.

β€œZlibrary my beloved”: Anthropic staff chats extolling piracy cited in Sony suit

Some of the world’s leading music publishers think that Anthropic got off too light in a historic settlement where the Claude maker paid authors $1.5 billion after admitting to pirating more than 7 million books to train AI.

β€œ$1.5 billion is obviously not a large enough settlement to deter infringing conduct by a company that has parlayed such mass infringement into a staggering $2-trillion-dollar valuation,” music publishers said in a lawsuit filed Friday.

Music publishers suing Anthropic include Sony, EMI, and Warner Chappell. They alleged that Anthropic’s illegal torrenting also included β€œthousands upon thousands” of their copyrighted musical compositions.

DOOM Played on Series of 555 Timers

It’s technically true that any piece of software can be reproduced in hardware, although modern software’s size and complexity generally makes this a non-starter. But if we go far enough back in time, older software becomes easier and easier to implement in hardware. The original DOOM from 1993 might one day be recreated in full this way, but that day is not today. Instead, [Nick] has recreated the original music from that game, playing the opening track in nothing but 555 timers.

The circuit starts with a 555 timer that acts as a system clock with a rate of just over 7 Hz. These pulses feed a binary counter which in turn feeds a decoder, giving the circuit 15 positions. Each output of the decoder feeds to a diode matrix which stores information about what pitch the circuit should play. The circuit only needs to play six pitches so the diodes effectively connect each moment in time to one of these six notes. From there the circuit feeds into a set of switches which select different resistor networks of another 555 which is actually responsible for producing sound. The resistor networks have different values to adjust the timing of the 555 to produce different pitches.

Of course this entire exercise is largely academic as almost any microcontroller would be able to be programmed to play this chiptune quite easily, but it’s not a bad idea to get down into the weeds of digital logic from time to time in order to refine one’s skills and knowledge about what’s really going on in the inner workings of circuits. Or, go even deeper than that and build the logic gates themselves from first principles.

Songs Created By AI Banned From Australia's Music Charts

Australia's official music charts will no longer accept songs that are largely or entirely AI-generated, requiring eligible releases to be "substantially human made." The BBC reports: The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) said the new code would help "promote the human nature of artistry." It follows a controversy around a cover of Madonna's Like A Prayer by Australian DJ Josh Fawaz which recently topped the ARIA dance singles chart and peaked at number 2 on the country's overall chart. The song has become a staple of commercial radio station playlists and been streamed more than 48 million times on Spotify alone. Fawaz later added generative AI credits to the song after a backlash. ARIA said that Australian artists were competing for attention "in the most crowded market in history" and that it was "not interested in promoting or celebrating the success of AI-generated music that does not contain human artistry." Under the new rules, AI assistance can still be used, but humans must have written the song, and have performed the lead vocal and primary instruments. AI can also still be used for mastering songs and, for example, using drum machines and auto tune. [...] Artists will be required to declare AI use when they submit a song for chart consideration. ARIA said that if it later emerged music was largely AI-generated it could retrospectively adjust chart positions, and if the piece topped the charts, it may request that awards given for reaching Number One were returned. Artists and their representatives will be able to challenge their exclusion. ARIA chief executive Annabelle Herd said: "These changes reflect our intent to remain dynamic and promote the human nature of artistry in what is, to say the least, a rapidly developing space. Artists already use AI tools in their work, the charts can and should evolve to keep room for that, but music generated wholesale by services built on artists' recordings is a different matter." She added: "A chart that rewards unlicensed AI output would undercut the very basis of the recorded music we exist to represent."

Encoding MOD Files Optically On Paper, Because Amiga’s Legacy Will Outlast M-Disks

All but a few of our very youngest readers are surely familiar with music formats that rely on optical disks. When we say [RobDevBuilds] made a MOD tracker that uses an optical disk, then, you might be forgiven for thinking he stuck a bunch of MOD files onto a CD– MOD files being a format of electronic music that was conceived of on the Commodore Amiga that is still used to this day. A dedicated MOD-CD player might be a fun project, but it’s not what [Rob] did; his project is far more impressive and impractical, as he’s come up with a way to encode the MOD files on paper for optical playback. This way the Amiga’s legacy can be preserved longer than the paltry thousand years promised by the optical M-disk format.

Zooming way, way in on the disk reveals that he’s actually printing the patterns of the MOD file row by row, just like you’d see playing it in a β€˜tracker’ program. A MOD file, you see, does not encode music like a WAV or MP3; rather, like with MIDI, it lists the notes the software reading the file– traditionally called a tracker–is to recreate. Unlike a MIDI file, though, you don’t have to store the same notes more than once: repeating sections are stored in patterns. So most of the disk is just a long list of hexadecimal numbers: several columns worth, one for each β€˜voice’ or instrument playing in the song. Another difference with MIDI is that MOD files are self-contained in that they are supposed to contain the samples, which isn’t in evidence until you flip over the disk.

There’s no B-side to [Rob]’s album; instead a QR-code like series of barcodes is used to encode the samples used in each track on the disk, as well as other information needed to recreate the MOD file, including metadata like title and artist, and the sequencing of the patterns on the front. Of course this means he needs two cameras on his physical mod player, one on each side, and steppers to slide them across the disk like a linear tracking turntable. The front is read via OCR of his modified Amiga β€œTopaz” font, while the rear holds the first 1084 bytes of the MOD file in a QR-inspired format [Rob] produced specifically for this project.

Unlike the last time we saw someone store music in QR codes, the more modest size requirements of modfiles– something that led to their use in keygensβ€” means this player can store the music’s 8-bit sound samples without the OPUS compression [Rob] is using affecting fidelity. He’s working on another video to give the details of the player– as he works out the bugs, right now it can’t jump betwixt patterns on the disk as fast as some modfiles need–but we’re willing to hazard a guess he’s got a Raspberry Pi in there, and that it’s probably not running the Amiga-inspired AROS operating system.
