Reactive Heat and Wind Come to VR, Thanks to Smart Plugs

Want to feel the heat of nearby fire, explosions, or radiation? Or even just the gentle warmth and breeze of a sunny day in the wasteland? If you said yes, you’re in luck because [GingasVR] created an immersive heat mod and wind mod for the VR version of Fallout 4 that leverages economical smart outlets and game scripting to do just that.

The heart of this hack lies in gluing two things that don’t normally go together. In this case [GingasVR] uses a bit of game scripting to control TP-Link HS100 or HS110 Smart Plugs, allowing virtual events to control things in the real world. An ordinary fan in a smart plug creates wind on demand, and heat comes from a 250 wattΒ infrared heat lamp aimed toward the player. For heat, an IR lamp is the way to go because it’s highly directional, can be quickly cycled on and off, and responds rapidly.

The range of immersive effects opened up by this is pretty compelling. Sunny weather yields a gentle glow of warmth, but nearby explosions cause a short full-blast flash of heat. The heat of fires also grows and fades with proximity. This being Fallout, [GingasVR] ensured local radiation has an effect on the heat level as well. Want to see it in action? Using ordinary appliances and smart plugs controlled from within VR to modify environmental effects is clever, and we like that it’s entirely nondestructive. The scripting mod for the game doesn’t overwrite any game files, and the hardware used requires no modifications.

Not into Fallout? [GingasVR] has similar Skyrim VR mod, if that’s more your bag. And if you’re modding Skyrim VR anyway, consider adding a β€œmeditation device” headband to make magic respond to your actual state of mind.

Sliding Into Perfection: The Open Task Light

A few years ago Dyson released a desk lamp that could slide up and down, in and out, balancing itself at every position. [Steven Bennett] saw that lamp and wanted to make his own. From this passion, the Open Task Light was born.

We covered the prototype of the Open Task Light back in 2023, and the project is a superb example of iteration. In his 15-part video series on the lamp, you can watch him take on each new aspect of the light, improving the mechanisms, electronics, and production. All those small changes add up to this beautifully finished product.

The first thing you’ll notice about the lamp is how little there is to notice: just a pair of extruded aluminum rails with a lamp head on one end and some rollers in the middle. Look a little closer at the rail and you’ll find a PCB running its length, feeding the lamp through pogo pins and leaving no exposed wires. The lamp uses a heat pipe to dump the LED’s heat, again hidden inside the aluminum extrusion. An ESP32 talks to a dedicated LED driver that runs a Cree high-CRI LED. The base comes in several variations for freestanding use or clamping to a table, and it rides on bearings so it can rotate as freely as the lamp’s other axes of movement.

The original lamp this was inspired by carries a hefty price tag, and while the 50-plus-part BOM on this one adds up, it still comes in at well under half the price of its inspiration. Making An LCD UI Look More Like Classic Indicator Lamps

The TermDriver 2 is a USB-to-serial interface with a twistβ€”it has a built-in screen for displaying relevant information. It can run at anywhere from 100 bit/s to 2Mbit/s, while showing you what’s happening on the wire. [James Bowman] worked on the TermDriver 2, and paid special attention to one featureβ€”the visual look of the status indicators on the display.

[James] had hoped to make the status indicators look a little more old-school, a little more analog. His inspiration was the classic indicator panels from Apollo-era space hardware, which used bulbs behind plastic indicators. Incandescent bulbs don’t switch instantly on and off; they take time to warm and cool. This behaviour is both more pleasant, visually speaking, and would aid in making short-duration events on the TX, RX and other indicators more visible. Thus, [James] set about giving the LCD UI elements sixteen steps of brightness from off to fully on. The simulated bulbs get brighter the more rapidly activity is happening on a given pin. The indicator graphics, while tiny, are also given a nice superellipse shape, to recreate the warm centered glow of an incandescent indicator.

Building Custom Backyard Solar Lights

In this modern age, if you want a trulyΒ swish garden that makes your friends sad when they visit, you need good lighting. [technocraftStudio] has been working on just such a project, creating custom wedge lights to illuminate garden beds in style.

You might look at the plastic housings involved and assume that they’re 3D printed, like the vast majority of such projects we cover these days. Instead, the enclosures are crafted out of PVC plastic, harvested by flattening sections of pipe with a heat gun. It has the benefit of being highly weather resistant, and cheap to boot. The lights themselves are small LED panels mounted on aluminium plate as a heatsink, and fitted with an acrylic diffuser to spread the light out more evenly. Power for the lights comes from an 18650 lithium-ion cell, charged by a pair of solar panels hooked up to an MPPT charge controller. A TP223 capacitive touch module is also included in the design to allow the lights to be turned on with just the touch of a finger.

The result is a surprisingly stylish bit of garden furniture which provides warm, even light and, ideally, needs a minimum of maintenance and attention since the sun provides the power.
