Now Accepting Bitcoin: 425 Los Angeles Bitcoin Merchants featuring Café de Leche

The Los Angeles Bitcoin scene is a bustling hub in California. First Stop: Café de Leche

Owners Matt and Anya Schodorf named Café de Leche after a phrase used in Nicaragua, where “café de leche” is a regional way of ordering coffee with milk. The couple met in Highland Park, and they started with a coffee shop before adding a sandwich shop on York Boulevard. The café also runs another location on the Cal State Los Angeles campus. According to the bitcoiner who sent this tip, the manager on the campus shop sees about 15 bitcoin purchases a week. (Sources include: NPR)

Next Up: Modu Café, Highland Park

Modu Café serves Korean-inspired pastries with a gourmet twist. Owner Jiyoon Jang, opened it in October 2024 after starting out baking sourdough during the pandemic. She wanted a place where her Korean-American upbringing and her love of design could meet. Standouts include a miso/garu cookie dusted with toasted sesame, a perilla lime tart, and a black sesame mochi cake. This shop accepts bitcoin on a square terminal that was likely self opted into according to the Bitcoin And Listener. (Sources include: LA Mag and the LA Times).

Now Accepting Bitcoin: Gyros, Cocas, and 219 Arizona Bitcoin Merchants

In 2025 the state government passed a Strategic Arizona Bitcoin Reserve, but I understand the state still hasn’t bought any coins. We can’t wait for the government to use bitcoin before we use it, or it will never happen.

The question is, can a normal person walk into a shop and pay with bitcoin? I have some friends in Scottsdale who have never used bitcoin in real life, so I asked them to test it. I recommended downloading a lightning wallet, sent them some satoshis, and sent them the BTC Map. They were surprised how easy it was to download a wallet and move satoshis across the internet; it felt very natural and how money should be, they said.

First Stop: Pita Cafe (23535 N Scottsdale Rd #102, Scottsdale, AZ 85255)

Their first stop was Pita Cafe, a Mediterranean spot attached to Scottsdale Burger Bar. Both accept bitcoin. My friends came back raving about the food: everything is made fresh to order, and they say to get the spanakopita and the gyro pita. The place was packed at lunch, but service stayed fast with plenty of seating.

The cashier wasn’t sure at first whether they took bitcoin. Then he noticed the Square terminal was already set up for it, and the payment went through quickly. It was his first time seeing customers pay in bitcoin, and he was excited about it. My friends also told me he looked at the amount on the screen and said he was shocked that they’d just paid “22,000 bitcoin”. They walked out feeling like royalty.

Next Up Echo Coffee (2902 N 68th Street, Ste. 135 Scottsdale, Arizona 85251)

Next they got hot cocoa at Echo Coffee. This cashier didn’t need to figure anything out. She knew they accepted bitcoin, switched the terminal over, and asked my friend to scan the QR code. She told them she thinks it’s super cool every time someone asks about it. Echo also donates 1% of purchases to the humane society, and the coffee bags have puppies on them. 

Why this matters

It’s a blast to send your loved ones out to a store along with some bitcoin to spend. Some friends already have bitcoin in investment portfolios, but the act of spending btc for tangible items shows what this movement is all about.

Now Accepting Bitcoin: Moonflower Coffee and 300+ Colorado Bitcoin Merchants

Exploring the growing network of Colorado Bitcoin merchants was an eye-opening trip that showed me both the immense promise and the friction points of real-world adoption in the Mile High State. Flying into Colorado, I was excited to experience the fall mountains, see my old friends, and dive into the local Bitcoin scene.

First Up: Moonflower Coffee Setup

The first stop on my list was Moonflower Coffee. Pulling up, I thought I had mistaken it for an auto-mechanic (FYI there’s a giant oil change sign and two bay garage look). Built inside a beautifully repurposed old auto body shop, Moonflower nails the ambiance: great coffee, a fantastic local vibe, and a spacious lounge area .

Like many modern registers, their Square terminal had native Bitcoin settings toggled on from the encouragement of local bitcoiners. Instead of selecting the “Pay with Bitcoin” option myself, I asked the barista to enable it on her side. That led to a nice 30-second conversation about Bitcoin before I enjoyed my Black Sesame Mocha Latte.

Another great option is Butcher Block Cafe, 5002 Washington St, Denver, CO 80216. They had a great breakfast and a classic diner feel, but be sure to go to this location. Apparently it’s family-run and their other location does not accept bitcoin… yet!

The Friction: Fifth House Coffee

The contrast between Moonflower Coffee and Fifth House highlighted just how uneven adoption remains.

Fifth House Coffee has a one screen Square register that doesn’t face the customer, so I couldn’t even select BTC on my own if I tried. When I asked if they accepted Bitcoin, the owner stated firmly that it was his shop and he would not take it. It was on the BTC Map, and has a Square register where the bitcoin acceptance feature likely was updated automatically in the background. I had to walk out without ordering. I still recommend to go stop by and ask about bitcoin.

Bitcoiners Can Lose

Reflecting on my time with Colorado Bitcoin Merchants, it forced a critical realization about where real-world adoption is heading. Some people may reject bitcoin on the surface and it’s up to us to dig deeper. We have a window before legacy banking rails step in to capture and monetize this infrastructure. If Bitcoiners want an open source, hard money world, we have the responsibility to create hyperbitcoinization.

Now Accepting Bitcoin: Buy Coffee and Bacon Across 200 Indiana Bitcoin Merchants

My trip into the Indiana Bitcoin market started at Kaffeine Coffee Co. on Fulton Street. The coffee was tasty, but my real surprise was running into a local Bitcoiner who was also paying for his order in satoshis, making me feel like not such a rare breed in this fiat world.

The friend I made shared about a network of Indiana merchants the Indianapolis local Indy Bitcoin Group has been orange pilling. 

First Up: Old Major Market LLC (Artisan Meats)

A common complaint of merchant Bitcoin adoption is that the shop owners will liquidate 100% of their Bitcoin back into cash using payment processors like Square. This is true to start, but a fascinating shift occurs once a business owner reads about bitcoin. Old Major LLC, an artisan meat distributor based in Indianapolis, is a prime example of that shift.

The Big Update for Indiana Bitcoin

According to owner Mark LaFay, Starting in 2026, Old Major Market made a major strategic decision: they are keeping 100% of the Bitcoin they receive directly on their balance sheet. They realized that holding bitcoin opens up significant long-term upside.

Big shout out to the Bitcoiners in Central Indiana that have been stopping by Old Major for over a year to buy bacon, sausages, and specialty meats with sats. While the shop originally agreed to accept Bitcoin and instantly converted every transaction to cash, the steady stream of Bitcoin payments caught their attention.

The “1% Orange Pill” Math

When a dedicated community directs its routine spending toward supportive merchants, the business case for the owner becomes undeniable:

• The Baseline: A local merchant generating $1 Million in annual revenue with a 10% profit margin brings home $100,000 in net profit.
• The 1% New Customer Shift: If local Bitcoiners represent just 1% of total sales, that’s $10,000 in annual Bitcoin transactions. If the owner sells the coins, regret creeps in, “what if I held the coins?”…
• The BTC Holding Strategy: Let’s assume the store instead decides to hold that Bitcoin in 2026, and BTC doubles in value this year. Holding the coins increases the owner’s total annual profit +20% to $120,000.

That financial reality is the ultimate orange pill. A focused group of customers directing their commerce toward open-minded owners can move the needle for merchant adoption, whether the owner holds from day one or learns along the way that they are missing profit.

Owner Brent Kumfer agreed to accept Bitcoin over a year ago through Square, enjoying zero processing fees and a steady stream of local Bitcoiner events. They are not yet holding bitcoin, but they are considering it.

When I heard of the Coljac Café Bitcoin acceptance, I expected to write a quaint little piece about a small-town coffee shop trying something quirky. I was completely wrong. What I found in Farmington, Missouri wasn’t just a place to grab a morning espresso, it was the undisputed heart of an entire regional monetary movement.
