ClickFix attacks infecting PCs and Macs are going viral

It wasn’t that long ago that ClickFix attacks were exotic. Now the technique has become mainstream as attackers reap its simplicity and effectiveness in infecting users of PCs and Macs alike. All that’s required is a compromised websiteβ€”a painless enough taskβ€”a fake CAPTCHA overlay, and the inclusion of a single terminal command. So many visitors get suckered into pasting and running the command that just about every malware pusher has adopted the technique. Even Kremlin-backed hacking groups are joining in.

β€œReddit is becoming post after post after post of people getting their computer infected via ClickFix,” independent researcher Kevin Beaumont observed Thursday. β€œLegit websites everywhere [are] getting hacked to serve the fake captcha prompts.”

How many of us make things worse

Huntress Uncovers Phishing Attacks Using Fake Browser Pages and Rogue RMM Tools

Huntress researchers have uncovered two phishing attacks that combined convincing fake browser windows with legitimate remote management software to establish persistent access to victims’ devices.

Both incidents, observed in August, began with phishing messages directing victims to attacker-controlled websites. The attackers then used a browser-in-the-browser (BiTB) technique to create what appeared to be a legitimate Adobe webpage, before convincing victims to download malicious software disguised as an Adobe Reader update.

Rather than deploying conventional malware, the attackers installed rogue instances of ScreenConnect, legitimate remote monitoring and management (RMM) software, giving them continued remote access to compromised endpoints.

Fake browser makes phishing harder to spot

BiTB attacks create a fake browser window inside a webpage using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. The window can replicate familiar features including an address bar, padlock and legitimate-looking URL, making traditional advice such as checking the web address less effective.

In the first attack, detected on 25 August, a victim clicked a link in a phishing email and was taken to a fake CAPTCHA page. They were subsequently presented with blurred documents and told they needed to download Adobe PDF Reader to view them.

The fake browser page appeared to show Adobe’s legitimate get.adobe.com address. However, the supposed Reader installer was actually ScreenConnect.

Once installed, the attackers deployed two rogue ScreenConnect clients, providing redundant routes for maintaining access. They then executed HideCursor.exe, a defence-evasion tool designed to conceal on-screen activity. Huntress intervened before the attack could progress further.

Second attack follows same playbook

Huntress identified another incident on 31 August involving the same Adobe Reader lure.

This time, the victim interacted with a malicious link delivered through AT&T Office@Hand, a legitimate communications service powered by RingCentral. The attackers again disguised ScreenConnect as an Adobe Reader update and installed two unauthorised instances.

The second ScreenConnect session was used to execute another defence-evasion binary, HideUL.exe. Microsoft Defender detected part of the activity, but the rogue ScreenConnect client still completed its installation before Huntress shut down the attack.

Legitimate tools remain attractive to attackers

The attacks demonstrate how threat actors can combine familiar phishing techniques with trusted software to make malicious activity harder to identify.

RMM abuse is a growing problem. Huntress’ 2026 Cyber Threat Report found RMM abuse increased 277% year on year and appeared in nearly a quarter of the incidents investigated by the company.

Huntress recommends organisations restrict who can install remote management tools, maintain an approved inventory of RMM software and monitor for new or unauthorised ScreenConnect clients. Employees should also be wary of unexpected software updates or file-viewing prompts, even when a webpage appears to display a legitimate address.

This Week in Security: Baked-in Malware, Freezers Not Freezing, Zoom Snoops Clipboards, and AI Makes Things Worse, Faster

The AI platform ServiceNow which offers both hosted and on-premises versions just patched a trifecta of CVSS-10 vulnerabilities.

CVSS rankings are determined by the severity of a flaw, the ease of exploiting the bug, if authentication is required for exploitation, if the vulnerability exposes confidential data, and other criteria. A CVSS of 10 is as bad as it gets, and having three of them at once is certainly attention-getting. Of the three vulnerabilities fixed, one allowed unauthenticated modification of data in the hosted instance, a second allowed arbitrary code execution via the GraphQL interface, and the third allowed arbitrary SQL commands that could modify the database.

ServiceNow claims Adobe, Lenovo, Fedex, and Fujitsu among their high-profile customers. With luck, the vulnerabilities were patched before significant public exploitation could happen.

Router Malware

Previously in 2026 the US Government warned against embedded malware found in consumer routers, which may be linked to the FCC enacting bans against certification and import of foreign-made consumer devices. This week, the NVD (National Vulnerability Database) reported specific embedded malware in the Zbtlink and MoreQuick brands of devices.

Multiple versions of the firmware, for multiple lines of products, contain a backdoor service that uses unencrypted UDP to connect to a command and control (C2) service. The service, or anyone able to intercept the network traffic, since it’s unencrypted, can execute commands as root, allowing them to change configurations, open tunnels, or steal ISP credentials.

The malware is baked into the firmware, so removing it is impossible for most users: a factory reset wouldn’t do. In theory if third-party firmware like OpenWRT supports these devices, the hardware could be made safer with a custom install.

Given how commonly the same device is marketed under dozens of names, likely the same devices and firmware have yet to be identified under other brands.

Vulnerability in Qubes

The security-focused distribution Qubes has an important security bulletin for recently discovered issues.

Qubes is built on top of the Xen virtualization system, where each application can be given a dedicated container. The utility to copy files from the primary container into an application container, qvm-copy-to-vm, displays a message if there is an error copying the file. To show the message, the utility launches kdialog with the error as arguments, but fails to ensure that the error doesn’t include shell commands.

The system call used to show the alerts has the dangerous side effect of calling the command as if it was a normal shell. This is extremely powerful, but equally risky: a shell typically allows multiple commands per lines, require quoted strings to protect arguments with spaces or complex text, and can expand variables. Generating an error that escapes out of the message and runs arbitrary commands was all it took.

Qubes already has a fix ready and everyone getting standard updates should have it waiting.

Were US Military Freezers Hacked?

The controls for the freezers used in the commissaries of a growing number of US military bases may have been compromised.

Independent researchers noticed growing reports in Reddit threads that freezer units were out of service, with other service members and families reporting the same. At least fourteen bases throughout the United States appear impacted, and the story has been picked up by the official military newspaper β€œStars and Stripes” as well as by mainstream media outlets.

Posts by staff at the bases clarify that it was not a power loss or cooling loss, the fridges and freezers were placed in defrost mode where they self-heated. The commissaries are operated by the Defense Commissary Agency, with central monitoring and control of facilities. Central monitoring makes complete sense when you need to ensure devices are keeping food at a safe temperature, but something definitely seems to have gone wrong.

Diving into it further, M. Elizabeth finds a post from August 9, 2026 describing vulnerabilities in the Danfoss controllers that allow unauthorized access to the refrigeration controller, and a second paper by the same team exposing over 20 vulnerabilities in Copeland refrigeration controllers that included full control of the unit settings. M. Elizabeth is careful to point out that without confirmation from the commissary agency, it’s impossible to know for sure that this was a hack of the control system, but the evidence is mounting.

BGP and SSL Hijack Used to Push Bad Updates

Virtualizor, a web interface for managing virtual machines in an enterprise (bring-your-own AWS), was recently targeted in a global route hijacking scheme.

Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is a core routing system underlying the Internet at large. Service providers use BGP to announce the ranges of IP addresses they handle and how to reach them. BGP is operated as basically a global gentleman’s agreement: the protocol itself lacks any authentication or encryption. If you think this sounds vulnerable to disruption, you’d be completely right.

Global disruptions have happened accidentally, like when an ISP in Pakistan took down YouTube, deliberately, such as when thieves hijacked the routes to cryptocurrency exchanges, and mysteriously, like when China hijacked parts of the Internet repeatedly with no explanation.

This time, the BGP attack targeted the IP range used by Virtualizor, and was combined with spoofed SSL certificates for the Virtualizor servers to push spoofed updates. The BGP announcement was targeted to a specific class C: a relatively small allocation of 253 addresses, similar to what a home network would use. BGP gives precedence to the smallest announcement for an IP range, so all systems that received the spoofed announcement routed those addresses accordingly. The network advertising the false route was based in Romania, though of course they could also be a victim.

With control over the IP range, the attackers were able to generate a certificate via Lets Encrypt, which was sufficient for browsers and the updater to accept the rerouted addresses. The attackers then published a malicious package that appears to install additional services. The company has not provided details about the trojaned update, so it’s not clear what other risks it poses.

Virtualizor does not have a public list of customers, but one has to assume it includes high-profile companies to make such an attack viable. Hijacking BGP is extremely obvious, and isn’t frequently used for such obvious spoofing attacks.

Linux Zoom Steals Clipboard Contents

Simon Tatham, the author of the extremely popular PuTTY SSH client among other projects, posted on Mastodon an interesting observation about the clipboard behavior of recent Zoom clients on Linux.

Relatively recently, some operating systems have added the ability to alert the user when an application access the clipboard. Unfortunately, Linux is not yet one of them, but thanks to other clipboard management tools, Simon noticed that the recent update to Zoom 7.1.5 copies the contents of the clipboard as soon as they change. What happens to the clipboard contents once copied is currently a mystery.

Considering that the clipboard can often contain passwords, authentication tokens, or simply data you might not want to share with Zoom, automatically scraping the contents isn’t what you’d hope for.

Plex Vulnerabilities

The Plex media streaming software sent out an advisory this week warning about security updates for the server and desktop application.

Details are currently thin, with the promise of future details once CVEs have been assigned. For now, make sure you’re on version 1.43.4 or newer. The Plex post has additional directions for updating on platforms that may not have pushed new packages yet.

AI Accelerates Exploit Development

Security company CrowdStrike has released their 2026 report on threats, focusing on the proliferation of AI tools in exploit writing.

CrowdStrike observed that 88% of exploits happened with 48 hours of the proof of concept code being released, crediting AI tools for shortening the adaptation. Typically proof of concept code is designed to demonstrate the vulnerability without providing an immediate mechanism for malicious use, and the window from exploit announcement to wide-spread risk was on the order of weeks. The report notes some vulnerabilities being widely exploited in 20 hours after public disclosure.

The tightening window makes patching even more important, but rapid patching caries the risk of instability when the patches themselves haven’t had extensive testing. Unfortunately there’s no simple solution; faster exploitation via AI tools drives faster patching, often also with AI tools that can introduce more bugs as well.

Angry Birds: Toy Ghouls’ new toys

Introduction

We continue tracking the activity of Toy Ghouls (also known as Bearlyfy, Laboo.boo, and Feral Wolf), a financially motivated group that has been targeting Russian organizations since 2025. The attackers initially relied exclusively on tools pulled from public GitHub repositories along with leaked Babuk and LockBit ransomware builders, later shifting to their own custom ransomware, GenieLocker. In early July 2026, we observed the group using a custom backdoor for the first time.

We identified two versions of this backdoor: one uses the HiveMQ MQTT broker as its C2 server, while the other relies on the Element messenger. Both versions include β€œbird” in their names:

  • mqtt-bird-agent 0.1.0 (HiveMQ version)
  • matrix-bird-agent 0.1.0 (Element version)

This post examines how the backdoor is delivered to target systems, how it establishes persistence, and how it communicates with its C2 server.

Technical details

Delivery

In this campaign, the attackers use Windows Remote Management (WinRM) to deliver the backdoors and their configuration files to compromised systems. The group relies on open-source tools such as Evil-WinRM and WinRM-fs to do this.

Installation

The backdoor can both run within an interactive command-line session and establish persistence as a Windows service, using the --install or install option, depending on the backdoor version. The --service (or service) option is not available by default and is instead used as an argument for the installed Windows service.

Element version backdoor help output

By default, the backdoor looks for a config.toml configuration file in the directory where the executable was launched, then falls back to %PROGRAMDATA%\SynapseAgent\config.toml (Element version) or %PROGRAMDATA%\cplsupport\config.toml (HiveMQ version). If no configuration file is found in either location, the full path can be specified using the -c (--config) option.

The backdoor accepts both unencrypted configuration files and files with partially encrypted sections. In the first case, once the backdoor is launched, it reads the file and partially encrypts it using the seal() function (the --seal option in the HiveMQ version), applying the ChaCha20-Poly1305 algorithm with a key derived from the value of the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\MachineGuid registry key. This means that after the backdoor’s first run, the configuration file becomes bound to that specific machine. On subsequent runs, the configuration is decrypted automatically. If the input configuration was already partially encrypted, it is likewise decrypted automatically.

If the configuration cannot be decrypted, the backdoor stops running.

The encrypted portion of the HiveMQ version’s configuration contains the following parameters:

  • agent_privkey: the agent’s private key
  • channel_id: the channel identifier used to communicate with the broker
  • server_pubkey: the server’s public key

In the Element version, the configuration file is deleted immediately after the first run, and the relevant parameters are instead written to the HKLM\Software\synapse\Config\SealedConfig registry key. On subsequent runs, the backdoor checks the registry for its configuration first.

The Element version’s configuration specifies the address of an Element server controlled by the attackers, a room identifier, and an access_token used to access that room. If this parameter is left empty, the backdoor prompts for the password interactively during installation. After successfully creating a session, the backdoor saves the received token to the blob field.

Communication

At startup, both backdoor versions send a GET request to http://ip-api.com/json to determine the system’s public IP address and country of origin.

The first version uses the public HiveMQ MQTT broker (broker.hivemq.com) as its C2 server. The free tier of this broker supports up to 100 concurrent connections and up to 10 GB of traffic per month. The attackers set up their own cluster and used it both to collect telemetry from compromised systems and to send commands to the backdoor.

  • Once a connection is established, the system’s status is sent via a POST request to broker.hivemq.com:8883/[cluster_id]/status. The message format is: {"online":bool,"hostname":"hostname.domain","timestamp":unix_timestamp,"location":{"json"}}.
  • At intervals defined in the configuration file, system information, such as CPU load and available memory, is sent via a POST request to broker.hivemq.com:8883/[cluster_id]/metrics3. The message format is: {cpu_percent":float,"mem_used_bytes":int,"mem_total_bytes":int,"disk_used_bytes":int,"disk_total_bytes":int,"load_1m":float,"load_5m":float,"load_15m":float,"uptime_secs":int,"hostname":"hostname.domain","timestamp":unix_timestamp}.
  • The backdoor sends GET requests to broker.hivemq.com:8883/[cluster_id]/cmd/req to retrieve commands from the C2 server. The server responds in the format: {"cmd_id":int,"command":"str","timeout_secs":int}.
  • Commands are executed via PowerShell.exe in hidden mode, using the -NonInteractive -NoProfile -Command parameters.
  • Command execution results are sent to the command server at broker.hivemq.com:8883/[cluster_id]/cmd/res in the {"stdout":"str","stderr":"str","exit_code":int,"duration_ms":int} format.

For the second backdoor version, the attackers set up their own Element server running on the Matrix protocol, meet.element[.]tw, as the C2 server. On this server, they created a room used to receive messages containing device information and to send commands for execution on the compromised system. The communication flow is as follows:

  • Once a connection is successfully established, the backdoor sends an m.bird.status message containing the system’s status. This message format is identical to that used in the HiveMQ version.
  • At intervals defined in the configuration file, information about the compromised system is sent as an m.bird.metrics message. Field names are slightly different from those in the first version: {cpu_percent_x100":float,"mem_used_bytes":int,"mem_total_bytes":int,"disk_used_bytes":int,"disk_total_bytes":int,"load_1m_x100":float,"load_5m_x100":float,"load_15m_x100":float,"uptime_secs":int,"hostname":"hostname.domain","timestamp":unix_timestamp}.
  • This version of the backdoor supports two types of commands, distinguished by the start of the received message.
    • To set a new interval for sending metrics, the attackers send a message beginning with config:set_interval (accepting values from 5 to 3600 seconds). The new value is saved to the HKLM\Software\SynapseAgent\metrics_interval registry key.
    • Messages containing commands to execute begin with the string cmd:. Based on data extracted from Element’s SQLite databases on the compromised system, we were able to identify the account name the attackers used to send commands: panel-bot.
  • Received commands are executed via the Windows command line interface.
  • Command output is sent as an m.bird.cmd_response message. This message format mirrors the one used in the HiveMQ version.

Takeaways

We have been tracking Toy Ghouls’ activity for quite some time. We previously found that the group had expanded its arsenal with a custom ransomware strain, GenieLocker, and we have now discovered that it has also developed a backdoor capable of giving it full control over an infected device. The new tools use unconventional channels to communicate with their C2 server: the HiveMQ MQTT broker and the Matrix-based Element messenger. This shift away from publicly available open-source projects toward custom-built tools suggests that Toy Ghouls is working to make its attacks more sophisticated and to evade detection for longer.
