29 October 2026 at 11:00

I love a good thriller, but finding one I haven’t already watched (or had the ending spoiled for me) is another matter. Netflix has plenty of thrillers to choose from, although it’s easy to keep coming across the same familiar titles when you’re deciding what to watch.

5 Netflix movies and shows I'm downloading on my kid's tablet before our next road trip

26 October 2026 at 14:00

It may be a clichΓ©, but my kids really do start asking if we're there yet about ten minutes into every road trip. One of the best ways to keep them quiet is to let them watch one of their favorite shows or movies on a tablet. Netflix has some great options that keep my kids entertained for hours.

Moonfin is the only Jellyfin client that feels like it's actually made for homelabbers

25 October 2026 at 14:00

I switched to Jellyfin from Plex some time ago, and I haven't looked back. While Jellyfin gives me control over my media collection, its clients don't always feel designed for people who run their own servers. The free and open-source Moonfin client supports Jellyfin and Emby and was built specifically with homelabbers in mind.

These Linux distros claim to be open source, but they're barely evenΒ close

24 October 2026 at 08:00

Linux has a reputation for giving people control over their computers, but plenty of commercial products use Linux without giving their owners much control at all. They ship with proprietary software, restrict access to source code, or lock down the hardware so thoroughly that installing a modified operating system becomes impractical.

23 October 2026 at 12:18

Apple announced the iPod 25 years ago on October 23, 2001, and it's doing something unique to mark the anniversary: a chance to try the original MP3 player. The company has a 404 "page not found" error website on Apple Music that contains a working virtual iPod.

YouTube finally let me build my own algorithm, here's 5 ways I made it better than the default

23 October 2026 at 08:30

YouTube has always been one of my go-to platforms for entertainment, learning, and keeping up with my favorite interests, but its recommendation algorithm doesn't always get things right. While the homepage can help me discover new content, it often feels cluttered with videos I have little interest in. Even the existing topic-based feed tabs can be surprisingly limiting, making it difficult to find exactly what I'm looking for without scrolling through endless recommendations.

Keeping Old Wi-Fi Radios Alive With Stream Conversion

22 October 2026 at 14:30

There are plenty of Wi-Fi radios out there that were built over the last two decades or so. However, many older models are now becoming less useful because many internet radio stations are switching to newer streaming formats that they don’t support. [Clifford Farrugia] has been working on a little project to save these appliances from the e-waste bin.

The HLS Radio Converter is the result of that work. It’s a small open-source tool that converts modern HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) protocol streams into regular old HTTP MP3 streams that older internet radio appliances are built to decode. You can run the tool on something as simple as an old Raspberry Pi. To make it work, you just give the tool the URL of the stream you’re looking to convert, and it then spits out a new URL to point your radio to which has the stream in the old-school format instead.

It’s a simple tool, but one that should prove very useful if you have a beloved old internet radio that can’t handle modern streams. We’ve featured lots of fun projects in this vein before, too, like this ultra-tiny internet radio build. If you’re working on your own projects in this space, be sure to let us know via the tipsline.

Your Google TV has an expiration date. Here's how to find it

22 October 2026 at 14:01

Tell me if this sounds familiar. You have an older smart TV that's no longer compatible with your favorite streaming apps like Netflix, Prime Video, and others. It's actually fairly common because nothing lasts forever, and software updates eventually stop. That's especially true with electronics, and that's exactly why your Google TV has an expiration date.
