About Rice and Moong Dal Khichdi

Khichdi is a traditional Indian dish that has been given to babies and sick people for generations because it is gentle on digestion and nourishes the body. Rice and moong dal together make a complete meal with protein, carbs and all nutrients baby needs for strong growth and development.

The texture is soft and creamy, and when you mash it well after cooking it becomes almost like porridge so baby can eat easily with spoon. You can keep it bit textured for older babies. Ghee adds richness and flavour to khichdi without being heavy on baby stomach.

You can make this khichdi your own way like you prefer. Some mothers add more vegetables, some like it thicker and some prefer watery consistency. You can adjust everything based on what your baby prefers and what works for their digestion.

I made this khichdi for my babies when they started solids and I always make fresh because it take just less time. They finish the whole bowl every time because it is mild and tasty.

  • Rinsing - I always rinse raisins thoroughly under running water before soaking. This removes dust and any impurities, make it safe for babies to consume.
  • Soaking - I prefer soaking overnight as it gives enough time for raisins to plump and soften. Longer soaking make extraction easier and water become richer in flavour.
  • Extraction - I squeeze soaked raisins gently with fingers to release all juice into water. Sometimes I use back of a spoon to press against strainer for maximum extraction.
  • Quantity - Start with just one teaspoon for six month babies and gradually increase as they grow. By one year, babies can take up to two to three teaspoons without issue.
  • Timing - I always give this as first thing in morning when baby tummy is empty. This help it work better and baby absorb nutrients well.
  • Storage - I prepare fresh batch every night instead of storing as it is best when fresh. Refrigerated raisin water stay good for one day if you need to prepare ahead.
