The extent to which anthropogenic climate change alters the intensity of individual extreme precipitation events can already be estimated reliably. However, the same cannot yet be said of the resulting flood hazards. A new study led by the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research(UFZ) found that climate change amplified flood peaks considerably more than precipitation itself during Storm Boris in 2024. Assessments based solely on precipitation may therefore lead to an underestimation of changes in flood hazards.

Shortly after 8am, two high-speed trains set off from Madrid’s Atocha station bound for Seville Santa Justa, but neither reached their destination. A failure in the LZB system – an automatic safety, signaling and protection system that monitors trains’ movement and activates automatic emergency braking – triggered a chain of events that led to a fatal accident, which killed 69 people and left many more injured.

Under the sea’s surface, a potential battle is brewing. This battle, centered on sabotage and deception, involves energy and telecommunication infrastructure being held at risk by a mixture of adversarial, opportunistic geopolitical strategies for expansive influence and control of critical resources, trade, and core industries. The ability to observe this conflict is also more constrained. Operating below the ocean’s surface is not like operating in other domains: Maneuvering is complex, and the terrain is highly dynamic.

University of British Columbia researchers have uncovered a vulnerability that could allow hackers to target and disrupt critical infrastructure such as water treatment plants and energy grids without needing to break into a facility’s own systems or crack its encryption.

The technique targets facilities that communicate with cloud-based monitoring and control systems over encrypted connections. An attacker would first need to compromise a router carrying traffic between the facility and the cloud.
