Musk went to β€œwar,” sought jail time for X ad boycottsβ€”but case ends with a whimper

Elon Musk has settled his lawsuit with advertisers that he once claimed should be criminally prosecuted for refusing to advertise on his social media platform, X.

In a joint statement that reveals little about the deal, the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA) and X said that they were β€œputting the litigation involving the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM) behind them.”

X sued the WFAΒ in 2024, shortly after a series of brands boycotting X caused the platform's revenue to drop by $1.5 billion by the end of 2023. Musk became upset, declaring β€œit is war” on X about eight months after he told advertisers who refused to buy X ads to β€œgo fuck yourself.”

Artist sues AI meme generator for selling deeply personal comic as ad template

Artist Elmer Saflor, who goes by the online handle β€œSuperelmer,” loves that millions of people have shared his β€œRunning Away Balloon” comic since it became a popular meme in 2017.

However, just because lots of people have copied it, that doesn’t mean it’s OK for an AI meme generator to commercialize his copyrighted meme as a template for who knows how many ads, he told Ars. That’s why he’s fighting to stop one of the biggest meme generators currently leveraging AI to rapidly scale the allegedly illegal use.

In a lawsuit filed earlier this month, Saflor, a digital creator and artist in the Philippines, alleged that Memes Apps, LCCβ€”which operates the content creation platforms Memes.ai and Memes AI Studioβ€”violated copyright law by selling paid subscriptions to an ad generator that spits out copies of his comic without permission.
