Review: You Can See Everything blurs the view of Elizabeth Holmes' deceit
In 2015, biomedical entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes was Silicon Valley's golden girl, lauded as the youngest and richest self-made female billionaire thanks to the company she founded, Theranos, which was valued at $9 billion at the height of its success. Then it all came crashing down when accusations of fraud surfaced about the company's signature blood-testing device, culminating in a sensational trial. Holmes was convicted on four counts and sentenced to 11 years in prison.
Holmes is back in the headlines thanks to a new film, You Can See Everything, which depicts the final days before Holmes, having exhausted her appeals, went to prison. Co-directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, it's a surreal, absurdist piece that has largely been received with gushing enthusiasm and no small amount of hype, with some declaring it the best film of the year. A few contrarian voices have emerged over the past week with much-needed reality checks, but there's no denying the film is destined to be an awards-season darling.
Pardon me for joining the buzzkills, but I cannot in good conscience jump on the You Can See Everything bandwagon. Sure, it has its moments, and the second half is highly entertaining, but there's nothing here to warrant all the breathless hyperbole. For all their much-touted access, Oppenheim and Fielder have produced a surprisingly shallow film that runs in circles, yielding very little fresh or novel insightβinto Holmes, personally, or much else.

Andy Jassyβs prediction: Amazon could have two $1 trillion businesses within a decade

No company has ever had a business with $1 trillion in annual revenue. Andy Jassy says Amazon is on a path to have two.
Amazon Web Services and the companyβs stores business could both reach that milestone in the next five to 10 years, the Amazon CEO said Thursday in the companyβs third-quarter earnings release and on its call with analysts.
Itβs βpretty rareβ for Jassy to make a projection that far out, Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowak observed on the call, asking how he gets there.
Jassyβs answer started with AWS, which is at a $184 billion annual revenue run rate after growing 39% in the third quarter. He expects growth of more than 40% in both 2027 and 2028, and pointed to a $578 billion backlog of contracted AWS revenue.
The largest customers reserve capacity in huge blocks, sometimes as much as a gigawatt at a time, giving Amazon βvery good visibilityβ into 2027, 2028 and part of 2029, he said.
Beyond that, he said, businesses are still early in using AI, the cost of running AI models keeps falling, and new uses keep emerging, such as AI models finding and fixing security flaws.
βYou canβt predict with any certainty five to 10 years from now, especially at these types of growth rates,β Jassy said of AWS. βBut itβs not a stretch for us to imagine that this could be over a trillion dollar business.β
Jassyβs forecast is a big jump from seven months ago. In March, Jassy told employees that AWS had a chance to reach at least $600 billion in annual revenue within about a decade, double his earlier expectation, according to Reuters.
Amazonβs stores business is bigger than AWS. Sales from Amazonβs online and physical stores totaled $309 billion over the past 12 months, or about $575 billion if Jassy is including third-party seller services and advertising in his trillion-dollar projection. Weβve asked Amazon to clarify.
For comparison, Walmart, the worldβs largest retailer, had $713 billion in revenue in its most recent fiscal year.
Whichever numbers heβs using, Jassy said βsome folks are sleeping a bitβ on how much progress the stores business has made.
Jassy argued that Amazonβs stores business is gaining ground on competitors. Amazon added more than $90 billion in gross sales over the past 12 months, he said, and is adding about twice as much per quarter as its next-largest U.S. competitor.
Units sold are up nearly 15% so far this year, Jassy said. He noted that nearly 80% of retail sales still happen in physical stores, which he expects to shift online over time.
The bold prediction came on a rough day for the company. Amazon shares fell about 6% in after-hours trading after its profit fell short of Wall Streetβs expectations.
Itβs not going to be cheap to get there. Amazon expects to spend about $220 billion on capital projects this year, mostly for AWS, and Jassy said the company will spend βmeaningfully moreβ in 2027. He said Amazon has βa clear line of sight to attractive financial returnsβ and is earning back its capital spending faster than before.
The impact is showing up in Amazonβs finances. Its free cash flow, the cash left over after capital spending, was negative $42.4 billion over the past 12 months, compared with positive $14.8 billion a year earlier.
With its spending running ahead of the cash its businesses bring in, Amazon has raised $115 billion through long-term debt this year. Its interest expense more than tripled in the third quarter to $1.7 billion, cutting into its profit.
βWeβre in the very early days of this inflection,β Jassy said. βOur strategy is working, and I expect it will for the foreseeable future.β
Reddit is moving to βa logged-in-only experience,β CEO says
In the future, you wonβt be able to use Reddit without logging in.
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman confirmed the impending change in a letter (PDF) to shareholders today about Q3 performance. He said that Reddit is shifting βto a logged-in-only experience," adding:
Moving to primarily logged-in will ensure our users have the best Reddit experience possible, and can find the content and communities most relevant to them. It is better for our business because we will have more signals for ads targeting, and being logged-in leads to higher engagement generally. It also allows us to protect access to Redditβs extremely valuable corpus of data, and helps us better adapt to emerging regulations around the world.
Huffman also said that the login requirement will help Reddit better retain new users.

AWS growth hits 39%, its fastest in nearly five years, as Amazon misses on earnings

Amazon Web Services revenue grew 39% to $46 billion in the third quarter, its fastest pace in nearly five years, and Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said he expects the cloud unit to top 40% growth in both 2027 and 2028.
That wasnβt enough for investors. Amazon posted earnings of $1.89 per share, well short of the $1.97 analysts expected, as higher interest costs on its growing debt and other losses ate into its profit.
Operating income beat expectations at $28.1 billion, above the high end of Amazonβs own guidance, and the 13.9% operating margin for the quarter was the highest in the companyβs history.
Revenue of $201.9 billion, up 12%, came in just under analyst estimates but at the top of Amazonβs forecast range. Shares fell more than 7% in after-hours trading, after closing down 4% during the regular session.
Update: On the earnings call, Jassy said AWS has a backlog of $578 billion in contracted future revenue, more than double a year earlier. He also said Amazon expects to spend βmeaningfully moreβ on capital projects in 2027 than the roughly $220 billion it plans for this year.

Amazon may need to count on its legendary willingness to be βmisunderstood for long periods of time,β as it asks investors to look past the costs to where its biggest businesses are headed.
In the companyβs earnings release, Jassy said Amazonβs retail business is gaining market share with improving margins. Retail sales, including online stores, physical stores and third-party seller services, totaled nearly $500 billion over the past 12 months, and AWS is now at a $184 billion annual revenue run rate.
βThere has never been a trillion dollar revenue business, and we may have two of them in the next 5-10 years,β he said.
On the earnings call, Jassy said those two businesses are AWS and Amazonβs stores business.

Advertising grew 11% to $19.6 billion, or 12% excluding currency changes, down from 22% on that basis a year earlier. Amazon blamed the timing of Prime Day and a few other factors, and said it expects ad growth to return to the high teens in the fourth quarter.
Online stores grew 2% to $68.5 billion, held back by Prime Day moving into the second quarter this year. Amazon said overall revenue growth would have been about 4 percentage points higher without the shift.
Third-party seller services, the fees Amazon collects from merchants on its site, grew 9% to $46.5 billion. AWS came within about $500 million of it.
Subscription services, which includes Prime memberships, grew 11% to $14 billion.
Physical stores, mostly Whole Foods, grew 2% to $5.7 billion.

Outlook: Amazon expects fourth-quarter revenue of $240 billion to $247 billion, up 12% to 16%, and operating income of $28.5 billion to $33.5 billion.
Wall Street had expected fourth-quarter operating income of $33.2 billion, near the top of that range, according to analyst Dan Ives of Yorkville Ives. It still expects to spend about $220 billion on capital projects this year.
Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky said on the earnings call that costs for Amazon Leo, the companyβs satellite internet service, are weighing on its fourth-quarter profit forecast as the service gets ready to launch later this year.
Amazonβs free cash flow, the cash left over after capital spending, was negative $42.4 billion over the past 12 months, compared with positive $14.8 billion a year earlier, mostly because of its AI investments.
Microsoft fixes a Windows 11 annoyance as PC revenue declines
Microsoft is beginning the rollout of a Windows 11 preview update that finally addresses a persistent power user complaint with the operating system: the right-click menu that obliterated years of muscle memory on command locations and hid others behind an additional click. The timing is notable, as the announcement comes alongside Microsoft's quarterly financial report, which showed a continued decline in the business of selling Windows licenses for new PCs.
The preview update, KB5127936, is cumulative for Windows 11 versions 26H2 and 25H2. The update will be a gradual rollout before eventually moving on to a normal rollout for all Windows 11 devices once it reaches general availability. The highlight of the new update should calm annoyed users who have spent years with custom scripts and services in an attempt to shape Windows the way they would prefer it. Users will get a "customize menu" button that controls what commands appear when they right-click their mouse. Users can toggle built-in commands such as Send To or Create Shortcut on or off, rearrange what appears on the main menu, and control which third-party extensions show up in either the main or submenus. The gripe with the right-click menu had been that Microsoft hid familiar command locations behind a top row of icons while moving other familiar commands under the "Show more options" submenu. Now, Windows users can customize the whole thing around their habits.
The new preview also highlights a new Windows feature called Cloud Rebuild, a recovery option that can reinstall Windows 11 directly from the cloud, even when an existing Windows 11 fails to boot. Cloud Rebuild will pull the Windows 11 image and needed system drivers directly from Windows Update. Users will not need a custom recovery image or external media to reinstall Windows. There is an important distinction to note, however. Microsoft classifies Cloud Rebuild as a recovery option, but it behaves more like a fresh Windows install than a repair, as existing applications and files will not be included. Those worried about data security can sanitize entire system drives prior to reinstalling. For a full list of improvements coming to Windows 11, including changes to Xbox mode and settings, you can view the official MicrosoftΒ release announcement.

Trump declares robot imports a national security threat
President Donald Trump has declared the imports of foreign-made factory robots to be a national security threatβordering new US negotiations with trading partners while holding out the possibility of imposing new tariffs on such robot imports in the future.
Issued on October 28, Trumpβs presidential proclamation represents heightened government scrutiny of foreign-made industrial robots that could complicate the manufacturing operations of major US corporations that rely on such robots. Those companies include Detroit automakers General Motors and Ford, electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, and aerospace and defense giants like Boeing and Lockheed Martin.
Trumpβs proclamation describes industrial robots and machinery as being crucial for producing US military weapon systems along with representing a βdriving forceβ behind all critical infrastructure sectors within the US economy. The proclamation cites an investigation under US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick as having found that US imports of such robots βpose[] risks to the United States industrial base and threatens the long-term competitiveness of the United States in a sector that is increasingly vital to national security.β

Google admits AI search makes less money, but it's fixing that with more ads
Google parent Alphabet reported its Q3 financial results on Wednesday afternoon, showing a healthy rise in revenue for the months of July to September. But the company's stock price has taken a beating, marking one of the largest post-earnings drops in its history. It comes down to several troubling aspects of the new report, including an admission by the company that AI search isn't earning as much as organic search, and despite that, Google expects to spend even more on AI next year.
The company took in almost $128 billion in Q3 2026, earning more than $26 billion in net income. These may sound like good numbers, but financial markets are not impressed. While revenue is up 25 percent versus last year, net income is almost $9 billion lower. As of this story's publication, the stock price is down almost 12 percent, and it was down about 13 percent earlier in the day.
While revenue was up 25 percent year over year, analysts expected more. Google reported earnings per share of $2.12, but the consensus projection ahead of Wednesday was $3.02. Google's Cloud products actually beat expectations, crossing $30 billion in revenue. That's about a billion more than analyst guesses.

As US ties fray, Europe plans first undersea cable link to Greenland
The European Union plans to create the first subsea Internet cable directly connecting Europe to Greenland. The Pan-Arctic Cable project could also extend to Canada and eventually link with Japan and South Korea, notably bypassing the United States.
The Pan-Arctic Cable is described as a European Union flagship project in a European Commission joint communication published on October 20, 2026. The policy document describes a new European strategy for the Arctic that supports βa sovereign, secure and resilient submarine cable connection linking Greenland directly to the EU,β while also suggesting that βlike-minded partners like Canadaβ could provide a stepping stone for future cable expansion toward Asia.
βIt is interesting that this project is even being considered, because five years ago it would have seemed like not a particularly commercially attractive proposition,βΒ Elisabeth Braw, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council who leads the Threats to the Global Maritime Order Initiative, told Ars. βBut the fact that it's being considered is very much on trend and a sign of our times.β

Amazon turns its most capable smart speaker into a smart camera, too
Since debuting in 2019, Amazon's Echo Studio targeted users who wanted superior audio quality from their Alexa-based smart speaker. The latest Echo Studio adds another less-expected differentiator: an integrated camera.
The Echo Studio with Home Camera, released alongside a pile of other Alexa devices today, doesnβt have many audio upgrades over the standard Echo Studio. Each speaker has one 3.75-inch high-excursion woofer and three full-range drivers. They both support Dolby Atmos and Amazonβs proprietary algorithm for adding a surround sound-like effect to stereo audio. Per the devicesβ product pages, the speakers have lossless HD audio, Advanced Room Adaptation, and features for fighting noise distortion. Amazon announced the Advanced Room Adaptaion today, saying that the feature βcontinuously tunes the sound to your space, automatically adapting to the room's acoustics.β
Both speakers have four-microphone arrays and the same AZ3 Pro processor that Amazon introduced a year ago. The processor has an AI accelerator for using Amazon's Alexa+ generative AI chatbot.
